6 Tips for Lasting Bouquets

At each farmers market we attend at least one return customer tells us how long their last Tova Cotton bouquet lasted. Many people say things like “The bouquet I bought from you TWO weeks ago just went in the compost pile today. I can’t believe how long your flowers last.”

Our flowers are harvested at the ideal time, and sold within days of picking. But there are still a few things you can do to help them last as long as possible.

Fresh flowers are THIRSTY!

Be sure to check and top up their water every day or so, especially in the first few days.

Trim those stems! Change that water!

Flower stems are like straws, they get easily clogged especially as their water gets dirty. Trimming their stems and completely changing out their water every 3 days helps them to keep drinking and stay fresh and hydrated.

Use the flower food.

Flower food works! It feeds the flowers and kills the bacteria that clog the stems and keep the flowers from drinking.

We provide you with enough flower food for a quart of water. A quart is equal to four cups, so we encourage you to use part of the packet when you get your blooms home and the rest during the first refresh.

Some flowers are wimpy, and beautiful.

Some flowers such as dahlias and garden roses are pretty wimpy, no matter what you do they do not last as long as other flowers. But they are exceptional while they stick around.

Remove just the aging flowers rather than the whole bunch.

Remove the flowers from the bouquet as they are deteriorating, rather than throwing the whole bouquet in the compost when only a few flowers are showing their age. Many flowers will last close to two weeks with good care.
